Prep Time: 10 min
Cook: 20 min
Ingredients:
- 1 ⅓ lb ground turkey
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 3 tsp worcestershire sauce
- ⅓ cup black beans, drained and rinsed
- ½ sweet onion, diced
- 1 tbsp jalapeno, seeded and minced fine
- 4 whole wheat hamburger buns
- 4 slices pepper jack cheese
- Arugula, for serving
- Avocado, sliced for serving
- Crinkle cut oven fries, cooked to package directions
Directions:
In a large saute pan over medium heat, heat a little bit of olive oil. Add in the onion and jalapeno. Sweat for 4-5 minutes and season with salt and pepper. Let cool slightly.
In a large bowl, mix together ground turkey, chili powder, worcestershire sauce, black beans, the onion jalapeno mixture, salt and pepper. Divide into 4 balls and make patties.
In the same large saute pan you used earlier, heat a little bit of olive oil over medium-high heat. Place the burgers in the pan and cook for 5-6 minutes per side or until the internal temperature hits 165 F. Top each burger with a slice of pepper jack cheese.
To serve, place the bottom bun on a plate, layer on the arugula and avocado followed by the turkey burger and finally the top bun. Serve with oven fries.
Other Ways To Prepare This Meal:
Plant-based: Use mashed black beans instead of ground turkey. Use a little bit of bread crumbs if the mixture is too wet. Use vegan cheese slices instead of pepper jack. Also use vegan worcestershire.
Gluten-free: Use gluten-free buns.
Kid-friendly: Scale back on the spice for the kiddos or separate out some ground turkey before adding in the other ingredients to make mini turkey burgers. Top with cheddar cheese.
